“How does a guy marry a guy?”

6 Nov

Here’s a video worth watching: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TJxnYgP6D8#t=218.

In it, a diverse group of CA kids react to videos of public performance same-sex proposals and then reflect on their own and other people’s thoughts and feelings about same-sex marriage. While the perspectives do skew to acceptance, I wonder how much of that bias has to do with creating space for conversation, information and reflection (versus choosing from a biased pool of kids to start with, asking leading questions, and messaging what the kids “should” think).

One child captures the heart of her own confusion and resistance to the idea of men marrying men and women marrying women in the simple admission, “I’m new to the concept.” Which makes me wonder what the adult conversation in CA would sound like if we, whatever our position on same sex marriage, took a step back from our positions and beliefs, and admitted what’s new, different, and not yet figured out for us.
