Justice for Tyler Clementi

16 Mar

The verdict is in:

“A New Jersey jury today found former Rutgers student Dharun Ravi guilty  on all counts for using a webcam to spy on his roommate, Tyler Clementi, having a gay sexual encounter in 2010” (http://news.yahoo.com/dharun-ravi-found-guilty-rutgers-trial-212458885–abc-news.html).

While the sentence and other consequences (the US could deport Ravi, who is an Indian citizen in the US on a green card) are yet to be determined, at least the message is clear: bias intimidation (a form of hate crime) is bias intimidation, even if you’re “just joking,” as Ravi has claimed.
